How do you polish a raw ruby, and how did they polish Gemstones 100’s of years ago?

I Have some raw gemstones, but not sure how to polish them. I have tried a dremel and different sand paper gritts, but it dosesnt seem to make a big diffence. Thanks
I Did try a Rock Tumbler, but it took so long and it also only rounded the rocks, I have shapes I have cut with the dremel, so I dont think I could use it after the shaping of the stone?

If you want to polish them then you can tumble them takes about a week and a half to three weeks. If you just want to clean them up warm water and a toothbrush will do the trick. Or if you know someone with an ultrasonic jewerly cleaner that will work quite well.
