How many shells were fired at the German trenches before the Battle of the Somme?

April 7th, 2010 — 3:59pm

I’m writing a piece of History Coursework, and before the men went over the top for months they had been firing shells at the German Trenches in order to destroy the barbed wire and kill as many men as possible. Does anyone know how many shells they fired? Because in my notes I have just written 1 1/2, is this 1 and a half million?Cheers

How do I obtain a birth certificate for my great-grandparents who were born in Poland?

April 6th, 2010 — 6:27am

Hello,

I need birth certificates for my great-grandparents. They were born in Poland around 1890 (I have the exact dates and towns where they were born).

(1) Does anyone know how I can obtain a copy of the birth certificate?
(2) What information would be on a birth certificate from this time period?

If it matters, I do not speak Polish.

Thanks!
Hi,

Unfortunately, I’m not in Poland.

Thanks!
Hello,

Thanks everyone for your replies. All three were very helpful.

Kind Regards,
