“War of The Century”: 1 of 20
Before invading Poland, Germany signed the Nazi-Soviet Nonaggression Pact, securing the eastern border of Germany. Limited trade, mostly on the part of the Russians, was part of the agreement. But everyone involved knew that it was a measure on both sides to buy time. Ideologically, both nations despised the other. Hitler had devoted much of Mein Kampf to his believe in the menace of Communism. Nazism was against everything Communism stood for. Part of the operational planning of the German high command involved a possible invasion of the Soviet Union. On July 21, a month after the fall of France, Hitler summoned Generalfeldmarshal Walther von Brauchitsch and instructed him to plan for an invasion of the Soviet Union

why are soviet losses so indefinite? From 20M to 30M.
Is it true that after WWII west military analysts consider losses ratio as 1:4 in possible war with Russians?
I would appreciate informed opinion.

While most people are rightly against Nazism, in the West, particularly among military folk, there is no doubt a sincere and justified admiration for the Wehrmacht and Waffen SS military achievements. There is no doubt that the world was a much uglier place due to Communism and the German defeat. Had Germany at least won in the East, more moderate voices would have eventually taken over the Reich. Don’t argue with me, I don’t believe you and I won’t listen. Rationality, sanity, priceless.

Somehow, this documentary manages to paint the defenders as the bad guys.

@D3adtrap You do US troops an injustice. They fought every bit as hard as any of the Allied forces. Their casualties war great. Remember The Remagen Bridge, Italian campaign, Omaha beach and The Battle of the Bulge and the US 101st Airborne.
I’m British and all the Allied forces deserve equal praise.

@a2k2k2k ABSOLUTELY cORRECT!

@fireball897 agreed. If Hitler had cut out the V1 anV2 (strategically they were a failure) and produced the Panther in greater numbers the war may have turned out differently. Hitler’s mind was always on Wonder Weapons, a complete waste of resources. The Me262 jet Hitler used as a bomber when clearly Adolf Galland wanted them as fighters. Hitler would not listen to any of his staff. He doomed Germany to failure by making himself Commander in Chief. Thank God he did.

@calibre9mm not so, Basil Liddel-Harte, a British WWI officer was the first to expound the theory of massed tank assaults. However, the powers that be back think still thought of a war conducted defensively. Later in the war the first British tanks arrived an did have mass attacks. It was Guderian who learned the lesson of massed tank spearheads, the Blitzkrieg. The French were so stuck in defensive WWI were beaten soundly in WWII as their generals still had a WWI mentality.

@Caracalla23 yes, on reflection it was morally correct and necessary. Many GI’s were killed at Iwojima and Okinawa. The loss of life would have been great for US personnel had mainland Japan been Invaded.
However, I think only one bomb should have been dropped, with the threat that if Japan had tried to hold out.
You are the first person on YouTube to make rational and reasoned points. For this I applaud you.

@TheArchangelxxi Yes it was morally correct.

@judd204 not so. The Nazis were 2 years away from an atomic bomb in 1945. Their own scientists sabotaged the project. The USA then went on to create the bomb. The Manhattan Project. As you know it was dropped twice. It saved countless G I’s lives. Was it morally correct or not? I really don’t know. It’s an unanswerable question.

@FireXtheRipper If the war had gone on much longer then “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” would have been used against German cities.
July 31st, 2010 at 6:09 pm
those soldiers looked pretty shabby to me, fat flabby, ugly, or skinny, not like fighting men.

@FireXtheRipper – dein neuer “Freund” schreibt nun seit Monaten davon Leute die es wagen Ed Van Halen zu kritisieren, allesamt ein Kamin hoch schicken zu wollen – und ich glaube er meint es ernst. Neger, Schwule, usw.
